About William

William is a lifelong resident of West Ashley who has devoted his career to public service and community advocacy. Born and raised in Sandhurst, Tinkler's deep roots in West Ashley span over four decades, giving him an intimate understanding of the community's evolution, challenges, and potential. His commitment to civic engagement was shaped early through community involvement, a deep appreciation for public service, and the skills he developed in earning his Eagle Scout rank with Troop 79 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. This foundation instilled in William the values of selfless leadership and the importance of dedicated local representation that would later drive his own entry into public office.

William’s educational and professional journey reflects his dedication to excellence and service. After graduating from Porter-Gaud School in 2002, he earned his undergraduate degree from Emory University in 2005 and completed his law degree at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2010, where he distinguished himself as an editor on the South Carolina Law Review. His legal career began in public service, working as a staff attorney for the South Carolina Court of Appeals and as a law clerk for federal judge R. Bryan Harwell. After gaining experience with complex nationwide litigation at one of South Carolina's largest law firms, he established his own practice in West Ashley, specializing in personal injury, business law, and civil litigation. His extensive legal expertise includes education policy, securities fraud, consumer class actions, and whistleblower cases, with bar admissions spanning multiple federal circuits.

Elected to represent District 9 on Charleston City Council in November 2023, Tinkler currently serves on the Public Safety, Real Estate, Human Resources, Business License, and Special Facilities committees. His first year in office has been marked by significant achievements, including advancing the $300 million Ashley Landing redevelopment project with EDENS—an unprecedented private investment in West Ashley's revitalization. He has also made progress on critical projects like the demolition of the vacant Ryan’s Steakhouse, pushed the Sam Rittenberg Boulevard Redesign, and initiated comprehensive stormwater improvements across multiple neighborhoods. Beyond his council duties, William continues to operate the Tinkler Law Firm, representing small businesses and individuals.

William lives in West Ashley with his wife and two sons. His vision for West Ashley centers on ensuring the community receives the same level of attention and investment that has transformed other parts of Charleston. He advocates for strategic infrastructure improvements, responsible development along corridors like Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, and the creation of walkable, connected neighborhoods that preserve West Ashley's unique character while meeting the needs of growing families. Through his combination of deep community ties, legal expertise, and unwavering commitment to transparent governance, William works to secure West Ashley's prosperous future while honoring the sense of community that has made it home for generations of families.
